Ectomycorrhizal fungi are important players in plant nutrient acquisition and cycling of organic matter. Depending on host plant, they contribute to decomposition processes by releasing enzymes, and facilitate uptake of nutrients as nitrogen and phosphorus.

The long-term impact of climate change on plant and symbiotic fungi, relation to saprotrophic fungi and organic matter turnover can be studied in field experiments in arctic Greenland and Sweden, using a range of field and lab based methods, incl. molecular microbial methods and use of stable isotope techniques.
